In March 2015, Dr. Sagar Parikh was appointed as the John F. Greden Professor of Depression and Clinical Neuroscience, and professor of Psychiatry, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  He also serves as professor of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health at U-M.   Dr. Parikh was previously professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, where he was on staff full-time from 1994-2015. In Toronto, he served as director of Continuing Mental Health Education and head of General Psychiatry and at the University Health Network. He completed two terms as deputy psychiatrist-in-chief and served as president of the Medical Staff Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees.  Dr. Parikh is the author / editor of three books and over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and co-author of the CANMAT treatment guidelines for Depression and for Bipolar Disorder, the world’s most cited mood disorder guidelines.

His research grants focus on testing clinical treatments, pharmacogenomics, biomarkers of treatment response, ketamine, workplace depression and medical education research.  He has conducted clinical trials looking at combination medication and psychotherapy for bipolar disorder and depression, as well as novel medication trials in mood disorders. Dr. Parikh has a special interest in Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation research and delivery, having developed and tested novel CME programs to teach clinicians new skills to diagnose and treat mood disorders. He published a new theoretical model on how physicians learn and change practice behaviour in stages, and developed new toolkits and knowledge translation products as part of larger plan for treatment guideline dissemination.  As well, he is active in the development and testing of new service delivery models like group medical visits and digital mental health tools. As medical director of Mensante, he helped create a novel internet system for recognition and management of mental disorders. He has a long history of consulting with companies for workplace mental health and at the EFDC, he serves as co-head of Workplace Mental Health Solutions.

He has won multiple awards for education and for research in psychiatry, including the 2019 Academic Gold Award for the Psychiatric Services Achievement (with Dr. John Greden and Ms. Stephanie Salazar), from the American Psychiatric Association for the Michigan Peer-to-Peer Depression Awareness.  The Michigan Depression Toolkit, a website tool that he leads, won the 2018 Bronze Digital Health Award. His teaching has won him three local, three national, and two international awards. He serves as secretary of the International Society for Affective Disorders, and was previously co-head, Section of Affective Disorders, World Psychiatric Association. Through his leadership as co-author of all 12 editions (1997-2023) of CANMAT treatment guidelines for Depression and for Bipolar Disorder, and his 2020 Mogens Schou Award for Education and Teaching from the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, he is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in mood disorders.
