Co-hosts Jeremy Fallis and Will Heininger welcome the New Year with a brand new episode of The Mental Minute with Michigan Medicine podcast. They begin by discussing resolutions for the new year before engaging in a Sports Minute, giving a shout out to all of the student athletes, parents, and coaches for persevering through the challenges of the year. The latter part of the episode is a conversation with two special guests from the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry, chatting about psychosis.

Dr. Ivy Tso and Psychologist Alyssa Smith, LLP, share their insights on psychosis and disorder and at-risk psychosis, highlighting their Program for Risk Evaluation and Prevention (PREP) clinic which is focused on early intervention. Psychosis is a disorder characterized by a loss of touch from reality. Because it can often be confused with other illnesses, the guest speakers highlight the specific and non-specific symptoms of the illness and emphasize the importance of asking the right questions for proper diagnosis.

“The earlier you detect and intervene, the better the outcome will be,” says Dr. Tso, encouraging listeners to be aware of how to identify psychosis, and how to get help.

They wrap up the episode with what they hope to see in the future of psychosis research. Dr. Tso discusses the potential medications and technologies that can be used for new treatment, while Alyssa reiterates the importance of awareness and education in schools and families for early intervention.
