Elena Frank is an associate research scientist at the Michigan Neuroscience Institute and director of the Intern Health Study at the University of Michigan, a prospective longitudinal cohort study of stress and depression among first-year medical residents. She has expanded this study to over 25,000 participants across more than 100 institutions in the US and China. 

Her research focuses on gender disparities in physician well-being and retention, with particular attention to work-family conflict, sexual harassment, and the structural and policy factors driving attrition among women. She has also led the development and implementation of a mobile health platform that integrates wearable and smartphone data to assess mental health in real time, including LLM-generated interventions and a reinforcement learning algorithm for personalized delivery; she has since extended this work to healthcare workers in Kenya and patients in clinical mental health settings. 

Her research has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, BMJ, and other leading journals, and has been covered by The New York Times and Harvard Business Review.
