Assistant Professor
U-M Primary Appointment
Psychiatry
Hans Schroder, Ph.D., is a Clinical Lecturer and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. He received his B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Michigan State University and completed his predoctoral internship and two-year postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital / Harvard Medical School. Dr. Schroder is interested in larger narratives and beliefs about mental health problems and their treatment. He is particularly interested in the psychological and treatment decision-making consequences of biogenetic messages about mental illness – those messages and beliefs that emphasize chemical and genetic contributions to distress. Relatedly, he is interested in how clinicians frame mental illness origins and the impact these viewpoints have on treatment expectancies, engagement, and outcome. A second area of research concerns how cognitive control and reactions to mistakes are impacted by anxiety and depression and designing interventions that can help alleviate these cognitive consequences of distress. He uses a multimethod approach to understand these issues, including electroencephalogram (EEG), behavioral tasks, and self-report survey methodologies.
