Captain Thomas Fluent, MD has served in the United States Navy for 28 years. Following graduation from the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Fluent continued his medical training and began his military service at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia; Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, and Naval Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland. After 10 years of active military service, he returned home to Michigan, and accepted a position in the Naval Reserves and on the faculty here at the University of Michigan. Over the course of his military service, Captain Fluent has actively participated in numerous military operations, to include multiple humanitarian and disaster relief missions, as well as Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; and more recently Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As a Navy Reservist for the past several years, he has been mobilized for overseas deployments on three occasions, most recently to Afghanistan, where he served in support of detainee operations. Dr. Fluent is an Associate Professor in the U-M Department of Psychiatry, where he serves as Medical Director for Ambulatory Services. Dr. Fluent will be honored as "Veteran of the Game" this Friday night, November 13th at the University of Michigan Men's Basketball game vs. Northern Michigan. Captain Fluent will also celebrate his upcoming retirement from the Navy on Saturday, November 14, 2015.
