Helen C. Kales, M.D., professor of psychiatry, is one of 20 international dementia experts named to
The Lancet Commission on Dementia Care.
The Lancet has partnered with leading academic and charitable institutions (University College London, Alzheimer's Society, ESRC and Alzheimer's Research U.K.) to establish a Commission on Dementia Care. The Commission is reviewing the current evidence to generate evidence-based recommendations and a campaign to implement priority actions for the provision of effective and equitable dementia care, to help prevent dementia and decrease symptoms and burden for people with dementia and their families so that they can live well.
Dr. Kales is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Program for Positive Aging at U-M. Following residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at Michigan, Dr. Kales joined the faculty in 1998. She is board-certified in both General and Geriatric psychiatry. Dr. Kales is recognized as an expert in outcomes related to depression in later life as well as those associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, and in pharmacoepidemiology research related to the use of antipsychotics in the elderly. Dr. Kales dedicatedly links her findings with clinical practice and family guidance. Her research program is directly informed by her clinical work and experiences with patients, families, providers and systems to diminish the barriers to effective and quality care for older patients with mental health issues. Dr. Kales is passionate about continuing to develop the University of Michigan geriatric psychiatry program into a national leader in preventing and overcoming mental health issues of later-life.
