Biomedical Engineering

Sherman Fan, Ph.D., is a professor of biomedical engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Fan’s research lies in the interface of engineering, biomedicine, and translation. His lab develops a variety of miniaturized devices by using physics, photonics, engineering, micro/nanofabrication, and biochemical principles and tools to address unmet clinical needs, and subsequently translate research outcomes into commercially viable products to benefit the whole society. Particularly, he uses the following technology platforms:

  • Micro-gas chromatography and vapor sensing for breath analysis and body odor analysis.
  • Laser emission microscopy.
  • Microfluidic platform for rapid and sensitivity detection of biomolecules in the liquid phase.
  • Wearable technologies.
