Stephen Thompson, M.D., J.D., is a psychiatrist and educator whose research centers on enhancing treatment for depression in veterans and other medically underserved populations. He integrates focus groups and qualitative methods—including resident and patient feedback—to refine neuromodulation approaches such as ketamine and transcranial magnetic stimulation in real-world outpatient settings at the Ann Arbor VA. As Assistant Program Director, he leads stakeholder-engaged research to optimize psychiatric training and care delivery amid evolving clinical landscapes. His work supports residents’ transitions to outpatient practice and embeds continuous improvement based on stakeholder insights. Dr. Thompson earned both his M.D. and J.D. at the University of Michigan, completed residency training within the U-M system, and now blends clinical practice, qualitative research, and programmatic leadership to improve mental health care systems.
