Karsten Bartels is a health services researcher, mentor and anesthesiologist with clinical expertise in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine. His research focuses on perioperative health services, with a particular emphasis on patient safety, pain management, mental health, and health economics. He has provided scientific guidance to government agencies and organizations at the federal and state levels, including the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the White House.
