Be a Volunteer
The U-M Depression Center welcomes volunteers to help us make a difference!
We are grateful for the support of dedicated and passionate volunteers who assist the Depression Center in many ways—by organizing fundraising and educational events, running the educational resource library (FDERC), individually assisting faculty and staff in their offices, or being advocates to raise awareness and understanding of depression and bipolar disorders.
If you are interested in supporting the Depression Center with your talents, please consider one of the following opportunities:
Depression Center Community Volunteer Committee
The Depression Center Community Volunteer Committee is comprised of members from Ann Arbor and surrounding communities who support the efforts of the U-M Depression Center. The Community Volunteers are instrumental in organizing fundraising events and educational activities that support the mission the Depression Center. The volunteer committee meets monthly and welcomes new members.
FRIENDS Depression Education Resource Center (FDERC)
Help organize and order materials, maintain our lending library collection, oversee the online catalogue, and most importantly, assist patients and family members with access to reliable information on depressive, bipolar and anxiety-related illnesses.
Internships and Work Study Opportunities (for U-M and Visiting University Students)
There are many ways that undergraduate and graduate students can help at the Depression Center. At several key points in the year, we are in need of assistance related to general office functions, event support, marketing communications, database support and web design. We offer semester-long internships for credit or on a work-study basis (U-M students only).
If you are interested in participating in an internship of this kind, please submit a cover letter and resume stating which area you are interested in and when you would like to commence your internship. Your application will be reviewed and should a spot become available, you will be contacted directly. Please send required materials to depression@umich.edu.
In addition, we regularly post the most current available internships on the U-M Career Center Web site. Please visit this site to submit your application for positions that are actually open.
We apologize in advance, but we are unable to fulfill requests from high school students at this time.
Psychology 305 (for U-M Students Only)
The Depression Center is a learning environment, whether focusing on our research activities, the educational programs and events we create for our faculty and the community, or the information we provide to patients and their families. Due to the strong interest of U-M students looking for opportunities “to learn” at the Depression Center, we have created a psychology practicum listed as PSYCH 305 through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. If you are interested in learning more about this class, please click here.
University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) Volunteers
The UMHS is always looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers to fill a whole host of roles in our hospitals and clinics. If you are interested in learning more about these opportunities or signing up to volunteer today, please click here for more information.
We are very grateful for your interest and desire to help fulfill the mission of the U-M Depression Center. Please keep in mind that we are still a very new Center, and that at this time, we cannot accommodate all requests for volunteering placement. However, please check back frequently and we will post new opportunities as they arise.
Thank you again for your support of the University of Michigan Depression Center. Volunteers are at the heart of what we do and we appreciate
your sincere desire to make a difference!
